  South Africa Two women arrested in Strand for alleged travel scamA person in handcuffs.Image Credits : X | @SAPoliceServiceSABC 25 November 2024,   06:44 [SAST]Police in the Western Cape have arrested two women, aged 59 and 53, in Strand for allegedly defrauding about 80 victims of nearly R2 million through a bogus travel scheme.Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie says that the victims had responded to a social media advertisement promoting a trip to Thailand for R26 000 per person. The trip never materialised, leading to multiple reports being filed with police stations across Gauteng, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. On the advertisement, it was stated that each person should pay an amount of R26 000 into the bank accounts of the two suspects,  Pojie said. When the victims realised that the trip was not going to materialise, they reported it to different police stations across the country. Pojie added that t stanley cup he cases were centralised in the Western Cape.After  stanley cup investigations, the suspects were interviewed and failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the missing funds. This follows the publication of the draft reforms in retirement savings by National Treasury.The public has until August 29 to comment on the 2022 Draft Revenue Laws Amendment Bill. This will allow workers, both in the public and private sector, to access a third of their retirement savings a year. It is anticipated to be implemented in April next year. The amendment from Treasury has many positive aspects to it going forward in April next year it will allow workers one third of their savings through a savings pot once a year and the other two thirds will accessed once they retire which will mean workers will avoid having to retire in order to access their pension funds which will incentivise workers to save more once they access their one third savings pot,  says Cosatu   Matthew Parks. The workers spend more money to commute from their work places home and their monthly responsible income which means that workers are working for charity.
