It was a normal AAA price back then, nothing fancy, just the number most big releases wore on day one.
That launch price matters because the game did not stay still. GTA 5 kept showing up on new consoles, in bundles, and in sales that cut the cost hard. You were getting a game with a proper campaign, a huge map, and a set of missions that actually pushed you to plan things out instead of just driving in circles for hours.
Why the original price still comes upPeople keep bringing up the first price because it gives them a clean starting point. After that, everything gets complicated pretty quickly. Some players bought it at launch. Others waited for a sale. A lot of people jumped in years later on a different platform, at a very different price, with a very different expectation. That is just how this game has lived for most of its life.
There's also the inflation angle. In today's money, that $59.99 would look much higher, which makes the launch even easier to remember. But that does not mean people actually paid anything close to some huge modern figure. They paid the normal premium-game rate at the time, and that was that.
